Vegtember: Local Farmers Market

One of the big reasons for doing Vegtember is to try and consume food in a more sustainable way. There are reasons why eating less meat helps in this. But one of the biggest environmental factors in respect of food is the “food miles”. How far the food has to travel to get to your store, or to your plate.

This is an issue for meat, and for vegetarian products. This is especially pronounced when food stuffs are perishable and need to be refrigerated as they are transported.

One of the best things you can do to address the issue of food miles, and the carbon cost in terms of transporting your food is to buy stuff that has been produced locally. And a great place to do that is your local Farmers Market. I visited the Totnes Good Food market this morning and I have recorded a V-Blog about it. You can watch it here below.

  1. Enjoyed the blog Ralph. I will definitely be trying this market out some point in the near future. Thing I find with farmers markets though is the cost of some of the produce puts me off a bit. But hey, I guess that’s just the price you have to pay if you want to be greener.

    • Well it is funny you should say that. I was just chewing the fat over some of this with a colleague. Clearly some stuff is expensive, the fancy bread I bought was north of two quid (though having eaten some it was worth every penny). On the other hand I got a massive load of vegetables with some carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes and aubergine and it only cost 3 quid.

So it is high quality stuff, with an appropriate premium, but you are also cutting out the middle man so have the possibility of a bargain! Probably a swings and roundabouts kinda thing.
