One of the big reasons for doing Vegtember is to try and consume food in a more sustainable way. There are reasons why eating less meat helps in this. But one of the biggest environmental factors in respect of food is the “food miles”. How far the food has to travel to get to your store, or to your plate.

This is an issue for meat, and for vegetarian products. This is especially pronounced when food stuffs are perishable and need to be refrigerated as they are transported.

Vegtember: Butternut Squash Soup

It is starting to get cold again, and as always when cold my thoughts turn to soups and stews. I cant help thinking a stew might be pretty disappointing sans meat. But most soups I cook are Vegetarian anyhow, so I thought that soup was most definitely the way to go!

Vegtember: Quorn Satay Curry

Since mooting the suggestion of doing Vegtember, and explaining some of the reasons why, many people have spoken to me about meat replacement products. Specifically many people have extolled the virtues of Quorn chicken style pieces (other meat replacement products are available).

I have been told on many fronts that the chicken pieces are a perfectly adequate replacement for normal cheap chicken and great for stir-fries and curries etc, with the added advantage of being healthier, cheaper and easier than using chicken.
